TAHUN/ YEAR: 1841
KARTOGRAFI/ CARTOGRAPHY: John Walker, East India Company, London
Post-1824, maritime trade between China and India grew astronomically, due in part to the advent of the steam engine for sailing. By 1833, the East India Company’s monopoly on the China trade had expired, liberalizing private trade. 1841 saw the end of the First Opium War, which further liberalized trade by opening up various Chinese coastal ports, including Hong Kong. This map covers the entire Johor-Pahang-Riau-Lingga empire, which was both land-based and maritime-connected, and which was broken apart as a result of the Anglo-Dutch Treaty in 1824.
